NWU workshop for matric learners
Twenty matric learners from Ventersdorp visited the North-West University (NWU) Potchefstroom Campus from 16 to 18 July 2025 to attend a matric exam preparation workshop. ‘Despite some chilly mornings, we were met by excited young minds, ready to learn and explore!’ says Prof Christo Venter, who hosted the initiative.
During the three-day workshop, 14 volunteers – including physics staff, staff from the local Science Centre and postgraduate physics students – delivered talks and tutorial sessions on various topics in the CAPS Physical Science curriculum.
Prof Venter describes the programme: ‘We focused on problem areas, presented example problems, and also performed related experiments so learners could get hands-on experience and see abstract concepts come to life. We also provided individual coaching in problem-solving strategies as well as a hearty lunch. As a bonus, we observed the sun with our local solar telescope and explored some astronomy topics, while also touching on possible physics careers and study opportunities,’
Prof Venter acknowledged the support of Dr Derek Fish, director of the UNIZULU Science Centre, who provided training for the volunteers as well as content in the form of Essential Skills for Physical Science Workbooks (of which 120 000 copies have been disseminated across the country), and related videos. The North-West Department of Education assisted in the organisation of the workshop, as did the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP), who also sponsored the workbooks.
He also acknowledged the financial support of NITheCS and the Centre for Space Research (CSR) at NWU. ‘Together we are making a difference in the lives of school learners and educators through the power of science, unity, and community building! The workshop left us with satisfied heart and minds, and we are looking forward hosting similar events in future,’ concludes Prof Venter.
