Application deadline: Open until filled
The School for Climate Studies at Stellenbosch University, in collaboration with SOCCO (CSIR), DFFE: Oceans and Coasts, SAEON, and UKZN, is launching a new research programme to support South Africa’s marine carbon dioxide removal (mCDR) capacity.
Three PhD bursaries (2025–2027) are available in the following areas:
Coastal Ocean Carbon Observatory – Investigating land-ocean carbon fluxes in subtropical estuarine systems. (MSc in ocean/estuarine biology or biogeochemistry required; skills in R, field/lab work, and ecosystem modelling beneficial.)
Uncertainty in CO₂ Observations – Using ship, robotic, and model-based data to improve reconstructions via machine learning. (MSc in physics/mathematics essential; Python and numerical analysis required.)
mCDR Impacts and Risks – Exploring the feasibility and risks of ocean afforestation and alkalinity enhancement. (Same requirements as #2.)
